"Everyone has forgotten about us except God. And God has sent you."
Resident of El Rincon, Honduras

In 2000, Trinity youth embarked on a project to help the people of Honduras, who had suffered devastation from Hurricane Mitch with 5,600 deaths and $2 billion in damage. Since then, a team of Trinity youth has gone back to work in the mountains north of Tegucigalpa for a week or two each summer. Since the summer of 2001, a medical mission team of doctors, nurses, and the occasional dentist has also treated Honduran individuals and families who face incredible public health issues. After hearing the stories of transformation, both in the missioners and in the communities they visited, adult Trinity missioners joined the pilgrimage in 2004, and have sent yearly teams for one week each winter.

Through our work with the Episcopal Diocese in Honduras, we share and participate in the work of God and help provide desperately-needed improvements, services, and medical care. At the request of and side-by-side with the Hondurans, the teams have:

  • Built a water cistern and laid pipe to bring fresh water to the community of Rincon de Delores.
  • Laid concrete floors in homes and built latrines to improve the health of the communities of El Rincon de Dolores and El Pedregal.
  • Helped to build a church sanctuary and rooms for elementary school classes and micro-enterprises.
  • Treated more than 2000 patients in some of the poorest communities in and around Tegucigalpa.

More than 180 people in our community have gone to Honduras, and many of these same people have gone on to return year after year for the opportunity to serve. Their energy and enthusiasm upon returning home often brings them into the fold of church life in new and exciting ways, and their stories serve as a testimony to God's love radiating through the world.

We invite you to join us in our on-going commitment to the people of Honduras. For more information about upcoming Adult Missions, contact Patricia Hurley, 617-536-0944. You can also click here for an info sheet and sample application.

Reports from Honduras
A team of seven parishioners left Boston on August 11 for a week to work at El Hogar, a school and orphanage for boys and girls in the capital city area of Honduras. Trip leaders Read and Jill Norton sent reports from the field about their work and adventures. Click here to read about their trip.

"It is impossible not to use the cliché, 'We were given so much more than we gave.' It is true, and the gifts were unexpected. Our faith was deepened by our witness to love and faith at work against seemingly insurmountable odds, everywhere we went. Our souls were opened, and we let God into our lives a little bit more... The name of the church we worked on is 'Annunciation,' a proclamation, as of the power of faith. Like our Trinity missions to Honduras, like the work of the Episcopal diocese there, like the village of Rincon - full of promise."
