Walk for Hunger

The annual Walk for Hunger, held the first Sunday in May, raises funds for Project Bread, which supports over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, food banks and food salvage programs in 124 communities across Massachusetts. Project Bread also develops innovative strategies to eliminate hunger in our community.
In 2007, 136 Trinity adults, children, and friends raised over $27,000 for Project Bread. Although the complete walk is 20 miles, walkers can, and do, choose to walk shorter distances. The walk itself is fun, and a great way to meet new people and reconnect with old friends.
Trinity's team joins thousands of other concerned persons in Massachusetts who want to eliminate hunger in our community. We consider the provision of food to hungry children and adults a matter of basic human dignity, as well as a biblical mandate. When we feed others, we feed ourselves as well. When our friends and neighbors go hungry, we are all diminished.
The walk provides the opportunity to:
- belong to a larger community who cares;
- support others who are on the front lines trying to combat hunger and other injustices which often seem insurmountable;
- let people in some very harsh, sometimes brutal circumstances know that someone cares enough about them to want to feed them.
Please join us, as a walker, sponsor of a team member, or volunteer for our team or the walk itself! For more information, contact Katherine Hughes.
Volunteer Information
Lots of hands (and feet!) are needed to make our Walk for Hunger team a success. Tasks include organizing the supervision of the children, registration and serving of bagels and juice on the morning of the walk, setting up and staffing recruitment tables prior to the walk, organizing educational opportunities for children and adults about hunger, organizing the purchase of team T-shirts, and leading practice walks prior to the walk. In 2007, we had more than 30 team volunteers to support our walkers.
Walkers need to start recruiting sponsors about 6 weeks in advance of the walk itself. There is no minimum amount each walker must raise - participation is the most important aspect!
The average amount of time it takes to walk 20 miles varies by individual, but it usually takes about 4 to 6 hours, depending upon stops and breaks. There are free buses at each checkpoint (about every 3-5 miles) which ferry walkers back to the starting line at the Boston Common.
Please join us by volunteering, walking, or sponsoring a walker. Click here to pledge to Walk for Hunger online.
