Tunnel of Love:  Notes and Links from the Forum Series 1/26

The Rev. Morgan Allen
January 30, 2020

Dear Trinity Church and friends,

Grace and Peace to you and yours!  I look forward to being with you this Sunday for our First Sunday Community Breakfast at 9 a.m.; worship at 10 a.m.; and the penultimate “Tunnel of Love” session at 11:15 a.m.

From Darkness to Light

Last week, we considered Springsteen and war, reflecting on Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem from the Gospel of Luke (19:29-44) before watching the “official video” of “War.”  We set that narrative and those images in conversation with Springsteen’s On Broadway “Born in the U.S.A.” introduction (the audio of which is available through Springsteen’s VEVO channel as Part I and Part II) and performance.  Anticipating this week’s program, we concluded last week’s session with Springsteen’s introduction of “The River” from the five-LP box set, Live 1975-85.

On the day our worship celebrates “The Presentation” of the infant Jesus in the temple, this Sunday we will consider both parenthood and what it means to be somebody’s child.  We will begin with a reading of the “Song of Mary” (Luke 1:39-56), and continue by watching Springsteen’s reflection on “Jesus Was An Only Son” from his Storytellers performance.  We will continue with the On Broadway introduction to “Long Time Comin’,” before we watch a 2009, full-band performance of “Living Proof.”  These scriptures and songs will support a discussion of our “ancestral” and “ghostly” experiences as sons and daughters, mothers and fathers.

While the language is authentic to the context, please note that this Sunday’s Forum videos will include profanity.

Blessings,

Morgan
